Yesterday and today I am busy trying to get stuff together for the annual Cystic Fibrosis GREAT STRIDES walk. It happens every year and is the CF Foundations biggest fundraiser. As you all know my daughter Lacy has CF. She asks frequently "mom how much longer until there is a cure, Im tired have having CF?". So, with that heartbreaking question being asked to me far too often and me never having a good answer... this year I have the time and energy to kick in a try to raise some serious fundage! Our walking team is growing every year and Im hoping at the Westminster walk maybe this year our group will have raised the most money. A Few Quick Facts about CF (for those that arent as familiar):
~according to the CF Foundation, 1/2 of all individuals with CF live to the age of 35; however 1/2 do not.
~CF is a genetic disease that causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus within the cells that line the body's organs such as lungs and pancreas. This mucus clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. Because of this, the patient may be on some type of nebulizers and/or inhalers for the rest of their life. The thick mucus also doesn't allow the pancreatic enzymes to properly break down and digest food, therefore the patient must replace them with Pancreatic Enzyme pills that they take with each meal for the rest of their life.
~CF occurs in approx. 1 in ever 3200 live Caucasian births. There are about 1000 new cases diagnosed each year.
~1 in 31 Americans is a carrier of one copy of the defective CF gene. (the person must have 2 copies (one from their mother and one from their father) of the defective CF gene to have disease.)
